Incentives are highly effective. This is both good and bad news for companies.

Good news in that variable compensation, whether annual or multiannual in structure, is a powerful management tool. It has long been established for both managers and many other employee groups for this reason.

Bad news in that designing effective variable compensation systems in a rapidly changing market in the face of new regulatory requirements can be challenging. The compensation system needs to create the correct incentives, while necessitating as little administration as possible on the part of the operating managers themselves and the HR department.
